ERSATZ JUNGLE, 2017

Steel, foam, cotton thread, ceramic vessels, blue diy.

I first started to question the apparent naturalness of the landscapes that surround us in my graduation piece Ersatz Jungle from 2017, asking myself how nature is perceived and transformed by our imagination. In order to discover its richness and metamorphoses, I made an installation in which meters of soft root-looking sculptures were seemingly coming out of the ceiling. Wrapped in white cotton threads, they were immaculate at first. On the floor, dozens of sprouting ceramic vessels were containing liquid blue dye. The installation was activated by planting the rhizome tips in the vessels, and day by day the blue dye penetrated deeper into the root system. Feeding on the blue concoction, the tubers became blue, dripping and creating puddles, giving the impression of having a life of its own.
